Following the assassination, Bill Maher confessed, “I can’t stop thinking about Charlie Kirk.” Neither can millions of other Americans, especially those who watched his memorial service and heard dozens of national leaders probing for the root causes of his extraordinary impact on our generation.

Let me offer my own take: The root cause of Charlie’s spiritual, cultural, and political fruitfulness is God’s blessing upon a man and a ministry that were seamlessly pro-life. Charlie understood that God had called him to use his formidable spiritual, intellectual, and organizational gifts to speak His truth in such a way as to advance the cause of human life: top to bottom, on every front under heaven.

This calling had a dual foundation: the life of Christ, living in and through him; and the words of Christ, shaping his worldview, his understanding of all things. Filled with Christ’s Spirit and armed with His global truth, Charlie Kirk went off to war on campuses all over America, fighting for the spiritual and physical life of multitudes of deceived, confused, rebellious, and self-destructive youth.

In this battle, the fronts were many.

He fought for the life of the unborn, declaring in all simplicity that they are fully human beings, fashioned by God in His own image and likeness, and therefore having a God-given right to life. Accordingly, he affirmed that abortion is nothing other than murder, abetted by the palpable lie that it is acceptable to lethally discriminate against another human being based upon his/her size, level of development, place of residence, health, or desirability.

He fought for the life of abortion-minded mothers, demonstrating from bitter experience and stubborn statistics that abortion is always harmful to a woman’s spiritual and physical health, and that it is contrary to, and destructive of, her God-appointed role, nature, and glory, which is to be the mother of the living.

He fought for the life of gender-confused youth, imploring them to accept their biological destiny as a good gift from a wise and loving Creator; to turn away from seductive voices and their own disordered feelings, to listen to reason and common sense, and to protect their precious souls and bodies from irreparable harm.

By word and example he fought for the institution of marriage, urging young people to prioritize marriage and family over career, and showing them from good science that marriage and family, far more than career, are a proven fountain of blessing to godly couples: a fountain of purpose, health, prosperity, fruitfulness, peace, and joy. A fountain of life.

He fought for the life of his beloved homeland, knowing that its future lies in the hands of youth who are all too easily taken in by the mirage of paternalistic socialism, and seduced by the siren song of Neo-Marxist “social justice”. He would win them back to the wisdom of our founding fathers, who, being well-acquainted with fallen man’s bent towards tyranny, sought to minimize the coercive power of the State, maximize the blessings of freedom through democracy and the separation of powers, but also to avoid the abyss of libertinism and anarchy by yoking the American Experiment to the laws of nature and nature’s God. Who, said Charlie Kirk, is the living God, the triune God of the Bible.

But above all, Charlie fought for the eternal life of the young people he loved, seizing every opportunity to direct them to the Source of his own life, marriage, family, wisdom, ministry, and good success: the Lord Jesus Christ, through whom alone God our Father gives to believing men and nations life, breath, and all things, both in this world and the next.

It makes for a fine epitaph: Charlie Kirk, seamlessly pro-life, just like the God he loved and served. May we, for whom the battle still rages, remember his example and follow on.
